SCCA RallyCrossers — Will Work for Fun

Words and photo by Greggar Helgeland SCCA® RallyCross® brings people together for the thrills of competition, but that’s only part of the fun. Between racing sessions, RallyCross participants are required to “work.” That term, however, is used very loosely. RallyCross operates in what is referred to as a “run-work” format, similar to that used by the SCCA Solo program. A day of RallyCross is split in two with half the day devoted to racing and half to work. Providing this labor is what makes RallyCross self-supported and means organizers don’t have to hire course marshals. This is what keeps RallyCross affordable. Because most of the work is performed on the race course and in groups, it also provides several other benefits. Working out on course is when you experience a significant social aspect of the sport. You’ll find yourself working with like-minded people that live life to the fullest. After all, this is how they got into racing. While people say opposites attract, you’ll find the racing mindset makes for fast friendships that last a lifetime. You’ll be working alongside competitors, many of which are seasoned RallyCross racers. This is your chance to ask them [...]

It’s Official: Tire Rack SCCA Solo Nationals Resets Record

TOPEKA, Kan. (September 12, 2018) – This year’s 46th running of the Tire Rack SCCA® Solo® Nationals has indeed reset the event record for number of participants to cross the start line on one of two courses constructed Sept. 4-7 at Lincoln AirPark in Nebraska. The Sports Car Club of America® record book will show that 1,375 drivers participated in the 2018 Solo Nationals, beating the previous record set in 2017 by 58 competitors. And of those 1,375 drivers, nearly 240 were first-time competitors at the year-end competition. After a week of rain and shine, including one day that delivered a record-breaking 2.15 inches of rain to Lincoln, a total of 76 winners were crowned across as many car classes. There were 43 class winners named after the first half of the four-day event, and an additional 33 identified by end of competition Friday. Howard Duncan, SCCA Rally/Solo Senior Director, said that list of winners includes 25 first-time champions. “I’ve been involved with the Solo Nationals for 34 years, and each one is slightly unique. As an example, this year we raised the entry cap to 1,400 drivers and rapidly reached that cap,” Duncan said. “Of course, there is [...]
