Photo by Perry Bennett of AutoXpix.com 2021 Solo Nationals Last weekend 39 drivers from the New England Region made the trek to Lincoln, NE for the 48th Solo Nationals event. After the 2020 event was cancelled due to Covid-19, it's not surprising that 1130 competitors in total, representing 45 of the 50 states, eagerly gathered at Lincoln AirPark to crown more than 60 national champions in autocross classes this year. With our 39 entries, NER was once again one of the largest regions represented at SoloNats. When all was said and done, NER put on fantastic performances, bringing home FIVE (5) 2021 National Championship titles, with an additional 9 earning trophy placements for the week. But to top it off, our drivers topped the PAX lists, proving just how strong our solo drivers are on a national level. We had over 110 drivers out to compete on a fast course.  The little bit of drizzle that came down towards the end of the day didn’t seem to dampen anyone's spirits as many drivers continued to find more time on course.  Street Class There were seven drivers in AS with 143 Mark Ponusky taking the win in a 2002 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 with a 47.396.  There was only one driver in CS with 111 Anthony Nunez setting his fastest lap of the day in his 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata with a 51.722.  DS was stacked with fourteen drivers all competing hard for the win with 102 Jeff Bakken taking top honors in a 2021 Honda Civic with a 48.320.  There were six drivers in ES with 51 Charles Sinkler narrowly squeaking out the win in a 1999 Mazda Miata with a 49.885 over 22 William Brundige by only 0.118.  We had six drivers in FS with 74 Dana Nicgorski setting the fastest lap in a 2018 [...]

Written by David Bocchichio The biggest challenge for the weekend was definitely the weather with cool temperatures and rain for both days. A small group of people braved the weather for Saturday's Test and Tune, which gave the drivers plenty of laps to dial in their set up for the rain, and a tricky sweeper that would let you know when you had it wrong. This left several drivers picking gravel out of their wheels, including yours truly. Despite the weather, over 90 drivers showed up to compete on Sunday. Make no mistake, the real heroes of the weekend were everyone who volunteered to stand out in the rain to make the event happen. I want to extend a huge thanks to all of you! By David Bocchichio Photo by Shawn Pan It was a cloudy morning but the rain held off while everyone was setting up. Just as we gathered for the driver's meeting the rain came in. It continued to come down at a steady clip for both morning run groups, making conditions quite slick for competitors. Drivers were raring to go after the first non-points event back on April 4th, which saw dry conditions in combination with a fast course. Unfortunately, the rain, along with a course that had some tricky slowdowns, made it quite difficult to push the limits.
