NER AutoX Cone-A-Thon: July 11, 2021

Written by David Bocchichio Photo by Jacob Ronald It was another beautiful day out with NER, with warm temps and partly sunny skies. We had over 110 drivers out to compete on a fast course.  The little bit of drizzle that came down towards the end of the day didn’t seem to dampen anyone's spirits as many drivers continued to find more time on course.  Street Class There were seven drivers in AS with 143 Mark Ponusky taking the win in a 2002 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 with a 47.396.  There was only one driver in CS with 111 Anthony Nunez setting his fastest lap of the day in his 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata with a 51.722.  DS was stacked with fourteen drivers all competing hard for the win with 102 Jeff Bakken taking top honors in a 2021 Honda Civic with a 48.320.  There were six drivers in ES with 51 Charles Sinkler narrowly squeaking out the win in a 1999 Mazda Miata with a 49.885 over 22 William Brundige by only 0.118.  We had six drivers in FS with 74 Dana Nicgorski setting the fastest lap in a 2018 [...]

Elsa Floods Thompson Majors

Water Water Everywhere As Hurricane Elsa ended its run up the east coast Thursday night and through Friday, vast areas of the northeast were under flood watches. Heavy amounts of rain were leaving a trail of damage from New Jersey northbound. Even still, racers began arriving for the Majors event at Thompson in wet conditions, with many looking at this weekend to provide the final points and starts needed for Runoffs qualifications. Setting up and unloading in the rain is nothing new. Everyone has faced rain conditions at some point. But as the evening continued and Friday arrived, conditions were morphing into the unusual. Photos by Trish Pelligrino and Stephanie Funk Saturday Wash Out Hoping for the best, race officials started Saturday morning with the full intention to run the planned schedule - two 15 minute qualifying sessions, and a 20-minute afternoon race. Group 1 headed out as the first cars on course to find puddles and rivers running across many portions of the track. Turn 3 had inches of standing water and the front straight had at one point 7 various running streams. As Group 2 made their way on track, things turned. [...]

B-Spec Build: Starting Out Strong

Over the winter, we began following JB Swan and Steve Introne as they set out to build new B-Spec cars for the 2021 road racing season. Both were seasoned drivers. JB with years of experience racing in production and IT7 cars, and Steve in the SRF and SRF3 vehicles. However, 2021 would put them into the seats of an entirely new class, with new cars they were building from the ground up. JB's 2021 ride is a Chevy Sonic and Steve took a Mini Cooper as his choice for B-Spec competition. In our first two articles, we followed why they each found this up-and-coming new class so desirable that they would make the move, to how they chose their donor vehicle, and the initial build process - stripping the cars down, fabricating roll cages, selecting seats, etc. So You Want to Build a B-Spec: Part 1 Building a B-Spec: Part 2 Steve and JB top the podium at the Pocono Majors going 1st and 2nd. Fine Tuning and Race Prep Our last check-in had both vehicles with cages, seats and engines. That left the fine tuning for turning a street vehicle into a race [...]
